The song is about The Wheatfield in the Battle of Gettysburg. My great-great grandpa was with the 27th Connecticut Volunteer Infantry (Co D) during the Battle of Gettysburg and they were heavily engaged in the Wheatfield.

I've been to the battlefield a few times and I always spend dusk to night in the Wheatfield.
